Captain plays up star power, focusses on women voters
Puducherry: Fans, friends and foes — they all turned up to see actorpolitician Vijayakanth’s last day of campaigning for DMDK candidate KAU Assana at Ariyankuppam on Monday.
“Captain… Dum Dum Dum,” shouted an excited 12-year-old boy hopping off his father’s bike which sported a sticker seeking votes for Congress candidate V Narayanasamy. “My son wanted to see the actor, that’s why we are here,” said the boy’s father. Father and son then found themselves a vantage point atop a tall building.
And of course, there were the fans who are also hard-core supporters. Twenty-seven-year-old Iyyanar got three hours’ permission from work just to see the actor. “I am an ardent fan of Vijayakanth and joined DMDK when it was formed. We are confident that the party will bag at least 10 seats,” he said optimistically.
Scores of women carrying children waited in the searing summer heat to listen to Vijayakanth as he sped through the closing hours on the last day of campaigning. Vijayakanth, who touched upon issues like lack of development, corruption and non-implementation of infrastructure schemes, wound up his speech at 4.45 pm. “I want to finish well before the EC deadline. I don’t want to be faulted for any violation,” he said in his typical rustic fashion.
A newly-wed couple stopped at the bus stand to listen to the actor. Throughout his campaign, Vijayakanth took great care to woo women voters. “Women are Shakti and they fulfil their duty in a selfless manner,” he said to loud cheers.
“He (Vijayakanth) speaks on a variety of issues in a practical and sensible manner. His visit will boost the DMDK vote bank here,” said a youth on a bicycle.
